Vignette — how to buy it, current price bands, and how to avoid overpaying.
LAST VERIFIED 2026-09-13The pricing here rewards reading the bands before you buy. A single day costs €9.60 and ten days €12.80 — barely three euros more — so the one-day vignette is poor value for almost anyone. Unless you are certain you will cross the border and leave again the same day, the ten-day band is the sensible default. The other thing to plan for is that the vignette is not the whole bill. Several Alpine crossings are charged separately at their own barriers, so a route over or under the mountains costs the vignette plus a section toll on top. 2026 is also the last year the physical windscreen sticker is sold. From 2027 the plate-linked digital version is the only option.
Toll system
A vignette (physical sticker or digital, plate-linked) is required for cars up to 3.5 t on motorways and expressways; several Alpine sections (e.g. Brenner, Tauern, Pyhrn) charge an additional separate toll on top of the vignette.
Buying a vignette
Buy at over 6,000 outlets across Austria and neighboring countries, through the official ASFINAG toll shop online, or via the ASFINAG Unterwegs app. A plate-linked digital vignette is now offered alongside the traditional windscreen sticker — from 2027 only the digital version will be sold, making 2026 the last year for physical stickers. Buy only through ASFINAG or its official retail network: ASFINAG warns of phishing SMS messages, emails, and fake shops impersonating them to harvest payment details.
