Greece: Motorway Tolls

Greek motorways are not run as one network, and that changes how a long drive feels. Several regional concessionaires operate their own toll stations, so the Athens–Thessaloniki corridor means stopping and paying repeatedly rather than once at each end. Budget for the interruptions as much as the cost. On a long leg the stops add up in time even when each individual charge is modest. The Attica Tollway around Athens works differently again: one flat fee per vehicle category when you enter, regardless of how far you go or when. The transponders are at least interoperable, so a single device bought from any operator works across the others' roads.

Several motorways (e.g. around Athens, and the main Athens–Thessaloniki corridor) charge tolls at booths, operated by different regional concessionaires; pay by cash, card, or an electronic tag depending on the road.

How to pay

Greek motorways are run by several separate concessionaires, each with its own toll stations, so a long drive means paying several times rather than once. Cash and cards are taken at the barriers, with contactless available at many automatic machines. Each operator also issues a transponder — e-PASS, Fast Pass, Olympia Pass — and these are interoperable across the national network, so a single device works on the other operators' roads too.

What it costs

Charges and vehicle categories are set per motorway rather than nationally, so the same car can fall into different categories on different roads. Most stretches charge for the section you pass through; the Attica Tollway around Athens instead charges one flat fee per vehicle category when you enter, regardless of distance, day or time.
