Ireland: Motorway Tolls

On the M50 the deadline matters more than the money. The toll itself is a couple of euros; missing 8pm on the day after you drive it adds €3.50, and leaving that unpaid for a further fortnight adds €46.50 on top. So the failure mode here is not expense but forgetting. People drive the M50 without registering it as a toll road at all — there is no barrier and nothing to stop for — and discover the charge weeks later when it has multiplied. If you are in a hire car, check whether it is enrolled in a tolling scheme. If it is not, set a reminder for the same evening. Everything else in Ireland is a conventional barrier you pay at.

Several motorways and the Dublin Port Tunnel charge tolls; the M50 around Dublin is barrier-free electronic tolling — pay online within days if you don't have a tag, or risk a fine for non-payment. Other tolled roads use traditional barriers (cash/card).

How to pay

Ireland splits into two systems and the difference matters. Most tolled roads have ordinary barriers where you pay by cash or card on the spot.
