Driving in Lithuania

Lithuania has no tolls for passenger cars, and two figures that differ from its immediate neighbours in ways worth noticing. The alcohol limit is 0.4‰ — an unusual number, sitting between Latvia's 0.5 and the stricter 0.2 used in Estonia and Poland, and dropping to 0.2 for novice drivers. If you are driving the Baltic states in sequence, the limit changes at every border. The winter tyre requirement is the longest of the three: fixed by law from 1 November to 1 April, again by calendar rather than by conditions, with studs permitted seasonally. Headlights or daytime running lights are required at all times, year-round. Limits are 50 in towns, 90 on rural roads and 130 on the motorway — the highest of the Baltic three. The currency is the euro.
