North Macedonia: Motorway Tolls
How paying works on the toll roads, what it costs, and what to arrange before you go.
LAST VERIFIED 2026-09-13The useful quirk here is that the toll booths take euros as well as denars. If you have just crossed the border and have no local cash, you can still pay without finding an ATM first — which is not true of most of the region. Cards are accepted too, so for a single transit there is nothing to arrange in advance. One change to be aware of: since June 2026 the M-Tag lanes are reserved for tag holders only and no longer accept the older contactless smart cards. If you have used a card in those lanes before, read the lane signage rather than relying on habit. M-Tag devices are now sold through mobile operators' shops as well as the roads authority, which makes one easier to pick up mid-trip.

How to pay
Tolls are collected at barriers on the motorway network. Cash is accepted in both denars and euros, which is unusual and genuinely useful if you have just crossed the border with no local currency yet. Bank cards are taken as well, and there is an M-Tag electronic device plus contactless smart cards for the dedicated lanes. From 15 June 2026 the M-Tag lanes are reserved for tag users only and no longer accept the older smart cards, so read the lane signage before committing.
What it costs
Charges are set per section and vehicle category rather than by precise distance. M-Tag devices are sold through the roads authority and, more recently, through the retail outlets of the main mobile operators, which makes one easier to pick up mid-trip.
