How paying works on the toll roads, what it costs, and what to arrange before you go.

A conventional motorway with barriers and an electronic-only motorway with no barriers at all look much the same as you join them, and by the time the absence of a booth tells you which one you are on, you have already incurred the charge. That is why this is a before-you-travel problem rather than an at-the-roadside one. Arranging EASYToll or a Via Verde device in advance means it stops mattering which type you end up on. If you are in a hire car, the question to ask is not whether it has a device but whether the device is active and how the charges are passed on.
Toll system
Most motorways charge tolls, some at traditional booths (cash/card) and some as electronic-only "green lane" roads where non-resident/rental drivers usually need a transponder or must register online (or at a post office) within a set window after travel — check which type of road you're on before you drive it.
How to pay
This is the one to plan for. Several Portuguese motorways are electronic-only: no booths, no barriers, and no way to pay at the roadside — a foreign plate that simply drives through is billed afterwards, if at all, and unpaid tolls become a problem later. Sort it out before or on arrival. EASYToll links your number plate to a bank card, can be set up online or at a kiosk near the border, and lasts 30 days. A Via Verde visitor device works on every motorway and takes you straight through. A prepaid card tied to your plate is a third route, with the balance valid for a year after activation. Rental cars usually carry a Via Verde device — confirm it is active and how the company passes the charges on.
What it costs
Rates are distance-based and vary by motorway and vehicle class, with the electronic-only routes billed to your plate rather than paid at a barrier. The Via Verde visitor identifier costs around €37.50 to buy outright, with optional monthly plans running from roughly €0.54 to €1.99 depending on how much you use it.
