Romania: Vignette & Tolls

Like Bulgaria, Romania's rovinieta is not just a motorway charge — it covers national roads as well, which together make up most of the useful network. Dropping off the motorway does not take you outside it, and for practical purposes any significant drive in Romania needs one. The pricing has a quirk worth understanding: CNAIR sets the rates in euro but charges in lei, so the figure you pay moves slightly with the daily exchange rate. Prices quoted to the leu in older guides will be close but rarely exact. Buy through CNAIR or a listed authorised distributor. Unofficial resale sites are common here and charge a markup for exactly the same digital product.

Toll system

A digital, plate-linked vignette ("rovinieta") is required for motorways and national roads, purchased online or at petrol stations/border crossings, valid for a set period (day/week/month/year).

Price bands

2026 passenger-car (category A) prices are roughly 18 RON for 1 day, 31 RON for 10 days, 48 RON for 1 month, and 255 RON for 1 year (exact figures fluctuate slightly with the daily exchange rate CNAIR uses). Figures are indicative — confirm the current price when you buy.
