Driving in Slovenia

Slovenia is small enough to cross in an afternoon, and it borders Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia — so for most visitors it's a country driven through rather than to. That makes the paperwork matter more than the distance. A vignette is required for motorways and expressways. It's digital and plate-linked, so there's no sticker to display — which also means no visual reminder that you haven't bought one. Buy it before you join the motorway, from the official DARS webshop rather than a third-party reseller charging a markup for the identical product. Given how short the network is, the bands matter: a week costs around €16 and a month €32, against €117.50 for the year, so the annual option rarely makes sense for a visitor. Headlights are mandatory at all times, year-round, day and night. That's easy to forget if you've just driven in from Italy or Croatia, where the rule is narrower. Winter tyres are required from 15 November to 15 March, and at any other time conditions demand them, with a reduced requirement along the coast. The rest is familiar: 50 in towns, 90 on rural roads, 130 on the motorway, 0.5‰ alcohol and zero in your first two years, priority to the right at unmarked junctions, and paid blue zones for parking in most towns. Ljubljana restricts traffic in its historic centre, but there's no nationwide low-emission zone network.
