Sweden: Tolls
A mixed system — which roads charge, how paying works, and what it costs.
LAST VERIFIED 2026-09-13Sweden has no motorway tolls at all, so nothing here works like a toll road. What it has instead are three separate charges, none of which you pay at the roadside: a congestion tax in Stockholm and Gothenburg, infrastructure charges on a handful of bridges, and the Öresund Bridge, which is billed by its own operator. For a foreign-registered car, the first two arrive later as a monthly invoice covering every passage in the previous calendar month. That is the thing to watch. There is nothing to buy and nothing to register, but an invoice does have to reach you at a foreign address — so make sure the rental company or your vehicle registration has details that will actually find you.
Toll system
No general road tolls; Stockholm and Gothenburg operate electronic, barrier-free congestion charges for entering the city (charged automatically by camera), and crossing the Öresund Bridge to/from Denmark has a separate fee.
How to pay
Sweden has no motorway tolls. For a foreign-registered vehicle the congestion tax and bridge charges are handled by the transport agency's billing partner, which identifies the keeper and invoices through Epass24 — there is nothing to arrange in advance, but you do need to watch for the invoice reaching you.
What it costs
Congestion tax and infrastructure charges are billed monthly: the keeper receives a decision covering the previous calendar month, listing each passage and the total. Amounts vary by city, by time of day for the congestion tax, and by vehicle for the bridges. The Öresund Bridge is priced per crossing by the bridge operator and sits outside that monthly billing.
