Glasgow: Low Emission Zone
Scotland's low-emission zones work differently from England's Clean Air Zones: there is no daily charge to pay, because a non-compliant vehicle is banned outright rather than charged. Breach it and the penalty doubles with each repeat inside 90 days.

Which vehicles are affected
Non-compliant vehicles are prohibited, not charged — paying your way in is not an option. The minimum standards are Euro 4 for petrol cars and vans, generally those registered from January 2006, and Euro 6 for diesel cars and vans, generally from September 2015. Glasgow's zone came into force on 1 June 2023.
Registering a foreign or rental vehicle
There is nothing to buy and no charge to pay. The only question is whether the vehicle meets the standard, which you can check on the Scottish Government's LEZ vehicle checker before you travel. Blue Badge holders can register for an exemption.
Fees & fines
There is no entry charge. Breaching the zone brings a Penalty Charge Notice of £60, reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days. It doubles for each further breach of the same zone within 90 days, capped at £480 for cars and light goods vehicles and £960 for buses and HGVs, and resets to £60 after 90 days with no further breach. Camera-enforced with automatic plate recognition.
Exemptions
Vehicles meeting the emissions standards, plus certain exempt categories. Blue Badge holders can register a vehicle for an exemption.

Covers an area of the city centre bounded by the M8 motorway to the north and west, the River Clyde to the south, and Saltmarket and High Street to the east.
