Driving in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is small, free to drive and cheap to fuel, which makes it the easiest country here to pass through — and one where people routinely get the motorway limit wrong. That limit is 90 km/h, lowered nationwide in 2020 and among the lowest in Europe. Drivers arriving from Belgium at 120, or from Germany with no general limit at all, tend to carry their speed across the border, and enforcement makes no allowance for the habit. There are no road tolls anywhere in the country. Fuel is noticeably cheaper than in any of the neighbours thanks to lower excise duty, which is why the filling stations near the borders are busy — if you are passing through, this is the place to fill the tank. Winter tyres are condition-based rather than seasonal: required whenever there is snow, ice or slush, with no fixed calendar window. Headlights are not required in daylight outside tunnels. The alcohol limit is 0.5‰, dropping to 0.2 for novice drivers, and the urban limit is 50.
