Driving in Moldova

Moldova is toll-free with a zero alcohol limit, and the main thing to establish before travelling is where your insurance and rental agreement actually apply. The breakaway Transnistria region operates outside normal Moldovan control, and standard travel, insurance and rental guidance does not extend to it. If your route would take you through — as some direct eastward routes do — check explicitly with your insurer and rental company rather than assuming continuity, and plan an alternative if the answer is unclear. The alcohol limit is zero for every driver. Headlights are required day and night, year-round. There are no general road tolls, and winter tyres are not required nationwide by law, though the climate makes them a sensible precaution. Limits are 50 in towns and 90 on rural roads. Moldova is outside the EU and the currency is the leu.
