Norway: Motorway Tolls

Norway is the one country where doing nothing still works — but it is the expensive option. Every passage is read from your plate, and if you have registered nothing, the registered keeper is simply invoiced afterwards. The cost of that convenience is real. Without an agreement you pay a lookup fee per plate and forfeit the roughly 20% discount a tag earns on every passage. On a trip with a lot of crossings, and Norway has a great many, the difference is not trivial. In a hire car the invoice usually reaches you through the rental company, often with an administration fee attached. Worth asking how they handle it before you set off rather than reading it on the final bill.

Toll system

Extensive electronic, barrier-free tolling nationwide — cameras read your plate and you're billed automatically (via AutoPASS for residents, or a separate billing process for foreign-registered vehicles); there are no toll booths to stop at, but foreign visitors should register or expect a mailed/emailed invoice.
