Albania has a zero alcohol limit and almost no tolls, and the thing that actually shapes a trip here is neither — it is road quality. Most roads carry no charge, with a small number of specific roads or tunnels as exceptions worth checking locally. But surface, signage and maintenance vary considerably once you leave the main corridors, and mountain routes in particular are slow. Map distances understate journey times, often substantially, so plan on covering fewer kilometres per day than you would elsewhere in the region. The alcohol limit is zero for every driver, with no allowance at all. Headlights are required day and night, year-round. Winter tyres or chains can be needed on mountain roads in winter conditions. Limits are 50 in towns, 80 on rural roads and 110 on the motorway. Albania is outside the EU and the currency is the lek.
