Milan: ZTL — Area B & Area C
Milan restricts traffic through two overlapping zones: Area B, a large low-emission zone covering nearly the whole city, and Area C, a smaller paid-entry zone in the historic center around the Duomo.

Both zones operate Monday–Friday, 7:30–19:30 — no charge or restriction outside these hours or on public holidays.
Which vehicles are affected
Area B bans diesel Euro 5 and older and petrol Euro 2 and older. Area C additionally bans petrol Euro 0–2 and diesel Euro 0–3, and charges a daily entry fee even for many compliant vehicles.
Registering a foreign or rental vehicle
Foreign-registered vehicles are checked automatically by camera; if a rental or foreign vehicle isn't recognized, register it in advance via the official Area C website to avoid a fine.
Fees & fines
Area C costs €7.50 per day to enter; electric vehicles and some low-emission hybrids (≤100 g CO2/km) enter free. Area B itself has no separate fee if your vehicle meets the emissions standard. Figures are indicative — confirm the current fee on the official site before your trip.
How it's enforced
Camera-enforced at all entry gates.
Exemptions
Electric vehicles and qualifying low-emission hybrids are generally exempt from the Area C fee; resident and disability exemptions also exist but aren't relevant to short-term visitors.
Where the zone is
Area B covers roughly 97% of Milan's urban area (about 128 km²); Area C is the much smaller historic-center zone (about 8 km²) nested inside it.
