Rome: ZTL — Centro Storico & other zones
Rome's historic center and several other neighborhoods (Trastevere, Tridente, Testaccio, Prati) are covered by camera-enforced ZTL zones — driving in without authorization results in an automatic fine.

Hours vary by zone: Centro Storico runs Monday–Friday 6:30–18:00 and Saturday 14:00–18:00; Tridente runs Monday–Friday 6:30–19:00 and Saturday 10:00–19:00; Trastevere is a night-time zone active 21:00–06:00, Thursday–Sunday. Always check current signage for the specific zone you're entering.
Which vehicles are affected
Access is generally restricted to residents, permit holders, and authorized vehicles (taxis, deliveries in permitted windows) — unlike Milan, there's no general emissions-based exemption.
Registering a foreign or rental vehicle
Hotel guests can get a temporary access permit ("permesso temporaneo per ospiti alberghieri") covering one entry and one exit for their stay, arranged through the hotel or the Roma Servizi per la Mobilità portal. Some rental companies offer ZTL registration as a paid add-on.
Fees & fines
There's no per-entry toll like Milan's Area C, but unauthorized-entry fines run roughly €83–€332 (reduced to about €58 if paid within 5 days), plus an administrative fee of around €15 per gate crossed. A daily visitor pass costs around €6 if purchased in advance online. Figures are indicative and can change — confirm current amounts before your trip.

Exemptions
Residents, permit holders, and pre-registered hotel guests are exempt; there's no blanket exemption for electric or low-emission vehicles.
